Poon Hill and Muldai Peak – Lodge Trek

Nepal Nepal

Trekking Map

This beginners trek is a combination of two of the most popular peaks in Nepal, the famous Poon Hill peak (3,210 m) and the only insider known Muldai Peak (3,637 m).

This is a varied trekking route, which offers you the best opportunities to get to know and love the uniquely colourful culture of the Nepalese, the rich flora and fauna of the Annapurna region and the majestic beauty of the Himalaya Mountains on a relatively easy trek.

After a guided sightseeing tour of the most important cultural sites in Kathmandu, you will be driven to Pokhara. On the fourth day of your trip you start the trek and hike from mountain village to mountain village, along wild rivers, pass green terraced fields, meet colourful butterflies and roam fragrant rhododendron forests, from one lodge to the next. Your companions will be the mountains of the Annapurna region, the Machapuchare (fishtail), the Annapurna, the Dhaulagiri and many other magnificent ice giants.

The highlights of the tour include the sunrise at Muldai Peak at 3,637 m, from where you can marvel at the Dhaulagiri Range, the Annapurna Range, the Fishtail, the Lamjung Himal and another 25 peaks. Then climb the popular Poon Hill summit to 3,210 meters and be fascinated by the breath-taking elegance of the 8000, 7000 and 6000 meters mountain giants.

After the trek you will spend a day relaxing in Pokhara and end the tour with the flight back to Kathmandu.

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu – Introduction to the trip, equipment check and welcome dinner
Arrival in Kathmandu. You will be picked up at the airport and driven to your hotel. In the afternoon we will explain the details of the trip with you, and in the evening you are invited to the welcome dinner. Overnight in Hotel Tibet or same category, (D).

Day 2: Sightseeing in Kathmandu and preparation for the tour
Today we explore Kathmandu with a local guide. The most popular places and attractions are the Pashupatinath temple complex – with one of the most important Hindu temples, (the main temple is only accessible to Hindus) – the Buddhist / Hindu temple mount Swayambhunath – also known as the monkey temple – and the Buddhist Boudhanath stupa. In the late afternoon we will return to the hotel and pack for the tour the next morning. The rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight in Hotel Tibet or same category ,(B).

Day 3: Drive to Pokhara – about 6 to 7 hours drive
We drive to Pokhara early in the morning. On the drive you can get an idea of the life and the picturesque villages of the Nepalese outside the big cities. The afternoon is at your disposal. Overnight at Hotel Mount Kailash or similar category, (B).

Day 4: Drive to Kande (1,710m) and trek to Tolka (1,700m) – 1 ½ hours drive, 4 hours hike
We drive to Kande (1,710m) to start our trek there. We gradually hike up the path to the Australian Camp, where we take our lunch break after an hour of walking. Strengthened and recovered, we take the gently route through pine and rhododendron forests to Deurali. From Potana, after another easy hour’s hike downhill, we reach Tolka, where we quarter in the guest house for the night. Overnight at tea house lodge, (B|L|D).

Day 5: Trek to Ghandruk (1,940m) – 5 hours hike
We descend through the bird-populated rhododendron forest to Modi Khala, and begin the ascent to Ghandruk. This village is beautifully situated in front of the peaks of the southern Annapurna massif and the Hiunchuli (6,441m). Especially at sunrise and sunset the view is simply fantastic. The village still retains the traditional architectural style of its stone-roofed houses. If you want, you can also visit the village museum or just take a walk in the village. Overnight at tea house lodge, (B|L|D).

Day 6: Trek to Tadapani (2630m) – 5 hours hike
On this beautiful day of hiking, we gradually hike up through dense pine and wonderful rhododendron forests to Tadapani. First we climb many steps from Ghandruk to Bhaisikarka. Then the path leads through a jungle-like fairy-tale forest with babbling brooks and birdsong. With a little luck we can spot a white monkey face between the trees. Then suddenly Tadapani (2,710 m) appears out of nowhere. From here we can also marvel at the famous mountains of the Annapurna region (Annapurna South, Hianchuli and Machapuchare). Overnight at tea house lodge, (B|L|D).

Day 7: Trek to Dobato (3,426m) – 4 to 5 hours of hiking
The trekking route takes us deep into a beautiful rhododendron forest. Between March and April the colourful rhododendron blossoms delight the heart. Today’s route is characterized by many ascents and descents, but they are pleasant to walk. In Dobato we will again be able to enjoy a fascinating view of the mountains. Overnight at tea house lodge, (B|L|D).

Day 8: Sunrise at the Muldai view point (3,637m) and trek to Ghorepani (2,210m) – 6 to 7 hours hike
We get up early to tackle the 45-minute ascent to the viewpoint before sunrise. From the view point we will marvel at more than 25 peaks including the Annapurna Range, the Dhaulagiri Range, Nilgiri, Lamjung Himal Range and many other mountain giants. When the weather is clear, we can even see Pokhara Valley and Phewa Lake from the top. After sunrise and breakfast we will continue our hike to Ghorpani. Ahead of us is a steep and exciting climb to the Deurali Pass (3,150m). The view from this pass is fascinating. We see Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and Gurja Himal (7,193m) in the west and Annapurna II, Manaslu (8,156m), Himal Chuli (7,893m) and Machapuchare in the east. After the pass we reach Ghorepani. Overnight at the tea hous lodge, (B|L|D).

Day 9: Ascent to Poon Hill – and Trek to Thinkedhunga – 6 hour hike
Again we have to get up early, this time we go up to the summit of Poon Hill at 3,210m. The view that you can enjoy from the top is one of the most famous and popular in Nepal. In the west we see the Dhaulagiri Mountains and Gurja Himal. In the east we see the Annapurna massif, Manaslu, Hiunchuli, Machapuchare and numerous other peaks. The pyramid-shaped summit of Annapurna South rises above us, while below us, Kali Gandaki, lies the deepest gorge on earth, the depth of which is over three kilometres in some places. After breakfast we gradually hike down to Tinkhedungha (1,520m), where we will spend the night in a tea house. Overnight at tea house lodge, (B|L|D).

Day 10: Trek to Birethanti and drive to Pokhara (800m) – 3 hours hike and 2 hours drive
We follow the flat path to Birethanti for about two hours and temporarily lose sight of the mountains as we take the bus to Pokhara. In Pokhara we have the afternoon at leisure. Overnight at Hotel Mount Kailash or similar category, (B).

Day 11: Flight to Kathmandu, rest of the day free – Optional visit to the ancient royal city of Bhaktapur
We fly to Kathmandu early in the morning. The flight will take about 35 minutes and will give us a fantastic view of the Himalaya mountains. The rest of the day is at your disposal, which you can spend relaxing, further sightseeing e.g. Bhaktapur or shopping in Thamel. A good last chance to get some souvenirs. Overnight at Hotel Tibet or similar category, (B).

The conclusion of travel cancellation insurance is highly recommended. In the case of bargain price flights in particular, changes or cancellations generally can’t be made free of charge. In Nepal complications with the weather or with your health could make it necessary to break off your journey.
We have requested ERGO (Reiseversicherung) to create various service packages for you. You can book travel health insurance at https://www.reiseversicherung.de/vrv/partner/ep-Assistent.html?/data/agent/hagtnr=027256&/data/agent/nagtnr=000000.

Customers can book their travel insurance via ERGO or another provider at their own discretion.

The hotels and lodges booked by us
In Kathmandu and Pokhara the hotels we book are good and correspond to medium-level Western standards. Sanitary facilities are clean and functional; the hotel cuisine is adapted to Western eating habits and the food is safe to enjoy. There may sometimes be power cuts, or no hot water may be available for a while. The hotel staff is generally very friendly and looks after the welfare of guests. The hotels booked by us are as follows:

Kathmandu: Hotel Tibet/Manaslu ***+
Pokhara: Mount Kailash Resort, Lake Side Retreat ***
Palpa/Tansen: Hotel Srinagar **
Lumbini: Hotel New Crystal ***
Chitwan: Jungle Villa Resort
Nagarkot: Nagarkot Farmhouse

During the trek and in the interior of the country conditions are very varied, and travelers must sometimes expect basic sanitation facilities. For standard treks and tours you will stay overnight in typical “lodges” (teahouses). These usually offer very small single rooms or double rooms (some with no running water and no private shower / toilet).
In general, during the trekking tour you can select what you wish to eat from the menu. However, at altitudes of 4,000 meters it can happen that on some routes the choice of food is not very extensive. Typical Nepalese cuisine is mostly vegetarian, but very tasty, filling and wholesome. Travelers need to be adaptable, however.

Flying in Nepal
The domestic flights booked by us are with Tara Air, Yeti Air, Sita Air, Summit Air or Buddha.

Tour program
The travel program for all of our recommended tours is carefully planned. It can happen, however, that roads are closed without advance notice or are impassable, that there are waiting times of several hours because of traffic congestion or fuel shortages and that specific tourist attractions are closed for various reasons. Other restrictions such as flight delays or even cancellations due to bad weather, strikes, the health of participants or unfavorable conditions while trekking may also make the implementation of the travel program more difficult or at worst make it impossible. However, our local guides are prepared for such situations and will make every effort to achieve every aspect of the program to your satisfaction. As a result the inconvenience can normally be kept to a reasonable level. Nevertheless, it must be pointed out at this juncture that for the above reasons program changes are possible at any time and cannot be influenced by the organizers. The resulting costs are borne by the traveler. We ask for your understanding.
