Trip Details

Day 1: Kilimanjaro Airport – Arusha – Briefing and welcome dinner
You will be met by our driver at Kilimanjaro Airport and then driven to your booked hotel in Arusha. The drive takes about an hour and with a little luck you will get a glimpse of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru. After checking in, your guide will give you a short briefing about your booked trip and then look through your equipment. You have the rest of the day at leisure. In the evening you will be in-vited by your guide to the welcome dinner. Overnight in the Ilboru Safari Lodge or similar category (D).

Day 2: Sightseeing tour in Arusha and preparation for the tour in the afternoon
On the second day in Arusha (1,400m) you will be able to relax a little from the long journey, prepare for the upcoming trekking tour and get a little insight into the exciting and rich culture of Tanzania. You will be picked up after breakfast for a half-day sightseeing tour. First experience the hustle and bustle of the lo-cal market in Arusha, and then be driven to the Art Gallery (Cultural Heritage Gallery), a unique cultural center on the outskirts of Arusha. Here you have enough time to look at handicrafts from all over Africa. If you are interested, there is also the opportunity to purchase handicrafts for a fee. In the afternoon, after an extensive exploration of the gallery, you will be driven back to the ho-tel and can relax and prepare for the trek for the rest of the day. Overnight at Hotel Ilboru Safari Lodge or similar category (B).

Day 3: Transfer to Lake Manyara – Great Rift Valley, flamingos and tree climbing lions
You will be picked up from your hotel early in the morning by your safari guide and driven through the Great Rift Valley to Lake Manyara National Park. The landscapes of Lake Manyara are difficult to describe in words, and the game drives along the lake provide excellent photo opportunities. Although small (205 square miles), the park offers breathtaking scenery and is known for its huge mahogany trees, giant figs, lush acacia forest, and a growing population of blue monkeys and baboons. Permanent residents of this park also include impa-las, giraffes, elephants, and large numbers of buffalo. The lake is also home to large numbers of hippos. The park has a number of special features and is famous for its tree-climbing lions, the flamingos on the lakeshore, and the crested eagle and hornbill. Some additional tours are possible on this day, including a bike ride or a boat excursion. In the afternoon transfer to the hotel for Karatu and dinner. Overnight at Eileen’s Trees Inn, (B|L|D).

Day 4: Drive to Tarangire – Huge elephant herds, baobab trees and the Tarangire River
Tarangire is famous for its varied land-scape with nine different vegetation zones. The landscape of the park is charac-terized by the large number of old, imposing monkey bread trees / baobab trees (the largest on the continent), for which Tarangire is famous. The park’s river is the elixir of life for many wild animals living here, a wide variety of birds, in-cluding lions, leopards, zebras, giraffes, buffalo, antelopes and of course ele-phants. In fact, the park has the largest concentration of elephants in the coun-try and offers unique opportunities to observe elephant families. Today’s picnic spot is fascinating and a viewing point with great views of the river and wildlife and a good chance of seeing big game hunting during your picnic. In the afternoon we continue our game drive before we continue to your accommodation. Overnight at Eileen’s Trees Inn, (B|L|D).

Day 5: Game viewing in Ngorongoro Crater and drive to Serengeti National Park
After a hearty breakfast we drive to the UNESCO world natural and cultural heritage Ngorongoro Crater. The Ngorongoro is a collapse crater on the edge of the Serengeti. It was created when a volcanic mountain collapsed at this point. The crater extends over 27 hectares, its rim is over 600 meters high, which makes it practically a kind of Noah’s Ark and is inhabited by almost all wildlife species that are native to East Africa. It is one of the very rare places in the entire continent to see the black rhino. Here you will find the greatest concentration of African wildlife. In addition to a river, there are several swamps in the crater, an alkaline lake with a large population of flamingos, a forest and open plains. The caldera consists mostly of open grassland and is the best place in East Africa to see the ‘Big Five’. The elephants with huge tusks that live here are the larg-est on earth. This is attributed to the high mineral content of the volcanic soil and its grasses. In the afternoon we continue to the Serengeti National Park and end the day with a delicious dinner in our safari camp. Overnight at Embalakai Camp, (B|L|D).

Day 6: In the Serengeti National Park – the endless plains of Tanzania
After an early breakfast we head towards the most famous national park in the world, the Serengeti. The further we go into the Serengeti, you will understand why the name means “endless plains” in the local language. The park has an area of 18,000 km² and for the most part the plains stretch to the horizon, our senses play tricks on us and make things that are far away appear much closer. Here is the site of a breathtaking spectacle, the world-famous great migration of the wildebeest, the ‘Great Migration’. More than 2 million wildebeest, hundreds of thou-sands of zebras and all kinds of antelopes, including the abundant impala and Thomson’s gazelles, wander the park following the rain in search of food. These large herds naturally attract predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas. Many spectacular animal documentaries were filmed in this park. The Serengeti is also home to countless smaller, interesting animals such as mongooses, monkeys, baboons, jackals, foxes, honey badgers, stone hyrax and African hares as well as more than 500 species of birds.Overnight at Embalakai Camp, (B|L|D).

Day 7: Transfer to Arusha – on the way optional visit of the Olduvai Gorge and / or a Maasai village
On this day you will get up very early to experience an early morning magical sunrise that you will never forget and to go on a game drive when the animals are more active. This really is one of the nicest experiences. After the game drive, we return to the camp for an extensive brunch and then drive to Arusha. During the ride we will have the opportunity to visit the Olduvai Gorge, a famous place also called the ‘cradle of mankind’. Here Dr. Louis and Mary Leakey the remains of the first man to live on earth. This tour includes a short talk about the archaeologi-cal excavations and geological features of the gorge, as well as a visit to the museum. The island of Zanzibar is blessed with natural beauty and rich culture. Warm, sunny climate all year round. Visa
To enter Tanzania, a passport that is valid for at least 6 months and a tourist visa are required. The visa for German citizens can be applied for three to four weeks before departure at the Tanzanian embassy (approx. 50 EUR plus postage). Alternatively, the visa is also available when entering Tanzania (50 USD, to be paid in cash on site). We recommend this option; it is less complicated and cheaper. An exit tax of USD 30 is required for international flights from Zanzibar (payable locally in cash).
These visa and passport regulations are valid for the EU countries and Switzerland. Other citizens would like to inquire at the respective country consulate.

Vaccinations
No compulsory vaccinations, in particular no yellow fever vaccination, are required for direct entry from Germany / Switzerland, Austria to the mainland of Tanzania and Zanzibar. This also applies when entering a yellow fever endemic area in transit; as long as the airport is not left during the stopover and the stay is less than 12 hours. However, you should be vaccinated against tetanus, hepatitis A, diphtheria and polio. Hepatitis B and typhoid vaccinations are recommended for long stays.
We recommend that you consult your doctor in good time. Further information can be found on the website of the Federal Foreign Office.

Insurance
A travel health insurance (with rescue costs) is essential for your own safety and a prerequisite for booking our trips. In the event of an accident in the mountains or on safari that requires a helicopter, the helicopter will not take off until full coverage of the costs has been clarified.
We strongly recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance. Flights at bargain prices in particular cannot usually be rebooked or cancelled free of charge. In Tanzania there could also be complications with the weather, your health, etc., which would force you to abandon your trip.
We asked ERGO Reiseversicherung to put together different service packages for you. You can book the right travel health insurance for you at https://www.reiseversicherung.de.

It should be noted that geoDiscovery Tours only recommends that its guests book travel insurance through ERGO and assumes no responsibility for the contractual content between the travel guest and the insurance provider. It is up to each guest to book their travel insurance through ERGO or another provider.

Tour program
The travel program is optimally coordinated for all of the trips we recommend. However, it can happen that roads are closed or impassable without prior notice, that waiting times of several hours arise due to traffic jams or fuel shortages, that access to sites can be closed for various reasons, or other restrictions such as flight delays or even cancellations due to bad weather, strikes, Health of the participants, a pandemic or unfavourable conditions during trekking make the implementation of the travel program difficult or, in the worst case, impossible. However, our local guides are prepared for such situations and will endeavour to carry out all program points to your satisfaction. The inconvenience is usually limited. Nevertheless, it must be pointed out at this point that, for the reasons mentioned, program changes are possible at any time and are not the responsibility of the organizer. Any resulting costs are borne by the traveller. We ask for your understanding.
